We live in an unprecedented time in our world history and among many things this global pandemic is exposing and amplifying systemic inequity and oppression. That, paired with the loss of people and things we loved, and the constant uncertainty create high levels of stress. Stress can trigger unconscious trauma stored in our bodies and has an immediate impact on our brain. It fires up the amygdala, limiting us to our primitive emotional responses (fight, flight, freeze, appease, dissociate and annihilate), and simultaneously impairs the executive functions of the prefrontal cortex, which cuts us off from our ability to choose our response and think creatively.
If we want to form a different manifestation of humanity, we have to do the work of embodying different patterns of behaviors. It’s time to examine the water we swim in, that is White Body Supremacy.
In this 90 min session we will dip our toes into this exploration of White Body Supremacy (leaning on the wisdom from the book “My Grandmother’s Hands” by Resmaa Menakem) and its implications.
You will walk away with grounding and soothing practices which, if practiced over time, can help you stay present when faced with injustice and pain, which is an important skill in anti-racism work.
