In 2022, NewStories began working with Imaginable Futures, a foundation in Latin America that is prioritizing systems change for equity and whole-child education. Using principles and practices of Re-Storying, we were able to shape the approach of the foundation’s initiative in Brazil by connecting and amplifying key voices. Valuing local change that makes life better now cannot come at the cost of systems change, and vice versa: we needed to ensure that both were taking place simultaneously. A powerful new story must weave these two essential needs together. Participatory action research with leaders who were enraizado da communidade or “rooted in community” stood out as the path toward this type of transformation on two fronts.
